From May's featured articleZonefunk, also spelled Zone-Funk and colloquially shortened to "Zone", was a genre of synthesized music that had risen to popularity by the late 20th century AC. Zonefunk's distinctive sound was produced by an instrument known as the Zone Synth, a highly sophisticated electronic synthesizer capable of producing over three million distinct tones with a single button press. Advents in fourth-dimensional physics allowed individual frequencies to be disbursed via subspace, creating a unique resonance distortion previously unattainable by traditional instrumentation. Originating as part of a counterculture movement in the late 19th century AC, the Zone Synth quickly gained mainstream recognition with the release of Aurelius Gottschalk's symphony Twilight Decanter in Δ-median, a composition considered by music scholars to be the foundational piece which gave rise to the modern-day characteristics and conventions of Zonefunk music. The Varen Rift was a hyperspace anomaly created when an Arkei activation collapsed the null energy state within its own crystalline structure, destabilizing the local dimensional threshold and allowing an aperture to the newly-materialized subspace fold to manifest in realspace. From the surface of the planet Vakreos (pictured), this aperture appeared as a two-dimensional fissure between three-dimensional spaces, identical from all angles when viewed from the extior. Localized subspace distortions caused an otherwise-undetectable form of radiation released by the supermassive object Omen to become visible in realspace, creating the illusion of an enormous violet sun hanging over the Rift. The anomaly was presumed destroyed in 2011 following a raid by the Tsarnan Dawnbreaker Battalion. Photograph credit: Xavier Miavorn
